Empowering Rote through sustainability and community-driven solutions.
As more tourism arrives in Rote, so do the demands for products and services, with this there is a boost to the economy and more consumption.
Isolated from any waste processing facilities we aim to find solutions for all the different types of wastes materials that are consumed hoping to reduce the need for land fill to as little as possible.
By educating our community we hope to reduce the waste we throw out, and with the waste we need to discard that we can transform and recycle it into meaningful products.
One of the most common waste and most problematic, we aim to look at simple solutions for transforming our trash waste into plastic products that can be reused by the community.
We aim to fundraise for the following equipment that we will use in the processing of these plastic waste.
A list is provided here:
Once we have constructed the community plastic area, we will provide areas for plastic wastes to be recycled into plastic sheets or into specific molds to create recycled plastic products. We will use the community voice to develop the specific products of need in Rote.
In order for the initiative to run sustainably, the recycled products must be able to be sold so that the profits can fund the waste needs.
We will also charge a fee for plastic wastes to be collected, if they are not dropped at specific drop locations. A tiring level will be established, whereby big businesses will be charged the most, followed by expatriate hotels and homestays, with local businesses being charged the least. Expatriate households will also be charged, as well as a small fee paid by each village to cover those locals that cannot afford to use the systems.
The details of this will be discussed as part of the group.
Most of the organic waste can be sorted into 2 main categories, food scraps for animals to eat, or to organic matter that can be turned into compost.
The systems of shredding the organic matter, and allowing it to break down into an organic fertiliser will significantly change the current burn processes used in the community, that dissolve nutrients from entering the soils.
With more fertile lands, will come the opportunity to grow more trees and produce, so for a very easy system to be implemented will have much larger impacts on the environment.
